About Mahjong Collective South Africa
What started as a shared love for beautiful experiences quickly became something bigger.
Our Story
We’re two sisters with very different careers but surprisingly similar interests. One of us is a food scientist and sensory specialist who has spent years studying how people experience flavour, atmosphere and connection. The other is a medical doctor with a passion for aesthetics, beauty and helping people feel confident.
Somewhere between girls’ weekends, long lunches, wine nights, flower workshops and travels to the United States, we discovered American Mahjong, and completely fell in love with it.
Not just because it’s beautiful (although it really is), but because of what happens around the table. Phones disappear. People laugh. Conversations stretch longer. Strangers become friends. And somehow, a 200-year-old game feels surprisingly modern.
After seeing Mahjong become part of social culture across America, we knew South Africa would love it too. So we created Mahjong Collective, a space to make Mahjong feel approachable, stylish and social for a new generation of players.
